Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday inaugurated the tenements constructed by the Tamil Nadu Slums Clearance Board at Jailpettai here through videoconference from Chennai.
The project has been executed at a cost of Rs.16.52 crore. As many as 288 houses have been constructed.
Each house had a built up area of 393.20 sq.ft. It consisted of hall, kitchen, bedroom, toilet, and bathroom. The construction cost of each house is estimated at Rs. 5.74 lakh had been spent for each house. All modern amenities including play ground and park, concrete pathways, drinking water, sewage disposal, streetlights, and rainwater harvesting structure have been provided at Jailpettai.
A press release said the houses would be handed over to those who lived in the area for many years. It had come as a boost to the residents of Jailpettai, who were living in the huts for so long without valid property documents. The project had facilitated them to live in a better environment.
K.S. Palanisamy, Collector, and A. Jaya, Mayor, took part in the inaugural function.
The Jailpettai tenements were similar to 432 houses constructed at a cost of Rs. 23.36 crore at J.J. Nagar in Srirangam revenue division. Chief Minister Jayalalitha inaugurated the J.J. Nagar tenements on February 24, 2014.
