A successful cataract surgery was performed on a 21-day-old infant at Joseph Eye Hospital in the city on Wednesday. The infant, daughter of Sudha and Palanisamy from Labaikudikadu, was referred by a private hospital in the area. She was brought to Joseph Eye Hospital where she was diagnosed with a unilateral congenital cataract in the left eye. Dr. M.Rajamohan performed the surgery and helped in preventing vision deterioration of the child.
The infant was discharged on Thursday after the parents were advised to administer eye drops to their baby for 45 days. Hospital officials said the patient’s parents play a critical role in the postoperative care of the eye and the treatment.
“They must understand that more than the surgical procedure, a successful visual result depends on their ability to follow through with therapy. In congenital cataract, after cataract removal, intraocular lens (IOL) could not be implanted. It could be implanted only after the completion of one year,” an official release said.
