The State government has sanctioned 20 classrooms and three laboratories for the Periyar EVR Government Arts and Science College much to the relief of the institution which now accommodates 4,358 students in 70 classrooms.

The construction of the buildings sanctioned in connection with the centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister MGR, in all likelihood, would be over in a year’s time, Principal S. Rajendran said.

Besides, in the wake of its re-accreditation with ‘A’ grade in the third cycle, the college has been provided with ₹ 2 crore funding for augmenting infrastructure under RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan).

Of the sanctioned amount, ₹ 1.4 crore would be utilised for upgrading building infrastructure, and the rest for purchase of equipment.

A state-of-the-art library would be constructed utilising the fund, Professor Rajendran said.

New courses

The college will offer BCA; M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D. in Viscom; and M.Phil in Physics and Geography from the current academic year.

Barring the Ph.D. programme, the lists of selected candidates will be made known on August 10.

With the introduction of these new courses, all the 14 departments in the college would have programmes up to research-level, he also added.
