The School Education Department will shortly fill 186 vacancies in government high and higher secondary schools in the district, with candidates who had passed the Teachers’ Recruitment Board examination.

The vacancies remained to be filled after the process of counselling held for re-distributing of excess staff from schools and transfer counselling, following the start of the academic year. During June, the department carried out re-structuring by singling out schools where the number of teachers for particular subjects was in excess of sanctioned strength, and posting them in schools where vacancies existed. On instructions from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, the exercise was conducted State-wide with the purpose of improving the academic performance of government school students, much to the relief of school heads.

Across Tiruchi district, 55 Tamil teachers, three English teachers, 62 Mathematics teachers, 32 Science teachers, and four Social Science teachers were transferred as part of the exercise. To a considerable extent, the department ensured that there were teachers for all subjects in government high and higher secondary schools, so that students will have a level-playing field with their peers in private schools where a number of teachers are appointed to handle all branches of science subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology.

In the subsequent counselling conducted for transferring teachers to places of their choice within the district, 60 postgraduate teachers received the transfer orders from the Chief Educational Officer K. Selvakumar. Vacancies in eight newly sanctioned higher secondary schools were also filled in the exercise. Government high schools in Inammathur, Kannudayanpatti, Oothukuli, Tirupanjali, Kattuputhur, Paithamparai, T. Murungapatti and Aamur were upgraded as higher secondary institutions. For each of the schools, the State Government sanctioned nine PG teacher posts to handle Tamil, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Commerce, and History, apart from the post of HM. Newly recruited teachers based on TRB examination will be posted in vacancies spread over the district, especially in remote villages. A majority of vacancies are for graduate teachers, Mr. Selvakumar said.
