Sixteen shops at a commercial complex, owned by Tiruchi Corporation, at overhead tank campus near Chathram Bus Stand in the city were sealed by civic officials on Wednesday as the tenants had failed to remit rental dues.

According to officials, the HC, in a recent order on a petition filed by the tenants, has given four weeks time for tenants to pay dues. If dues were not paid within time, the Corporation was free to take possession of the shops and seal them as per the order, officials said.

Corporation officials led by B.Rangarajan, Assistant Commissioner, Srirangam, sealed the shops. Civic officials said the tenants owed the Corporation nearly Rs.1.55 crore after having won bids in 2011. The complex has 41 shops and similar action had been initiated on other shops previously.
