11 panchaloha idols stolen from temple in Kumbakonam

A total of 11 panchaloha idols of Sri Venugopalaswamy Temple at Pulianchery agraharam in Baburajapuram village panchayat were allegedly stolen by unidentified persons.

The robbery is said to have taken place between Monday night and Wednesday morning.

According to a complaint lodged with the Swamimalai police by Sudarsanan, Trustee of the temple, the temple has remained closed since Monday night.

It was not opened on Tuesday following sharp showers.

The temple priest, Ravichandran, who went to open the temple on Wednesday morning, found the idols of five Alwars, Sri Venugopalan, Sri Rukmani, Sri Sathyabama, Sri Krishnan, Sri Narasimhan and Lord Anjaneyar missing.

The temple, built about a century ago, belongs to a private trust.
