A mathematics talent test conducted by the Anna Science Centre – Planetarium on Sunday evoked an overwhelming response from the students in understanding the various patterns and formula of the subject.

In all, 1,065 students from 20 schools in the central region, including Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, and Karaikudi participated in the test organised to mark the birth anniversary of eminent mathematician Ramanujan.

Although the test was open for students of classes 5 to 8, the question paper was common. “We noticed that junior students in the classes of 5 were competent, although they were not fully aware of the syllabus content of higher classes,” said I.K. Lenin Tamilkovan, Project Director of Anna Science Centre.

The test provided an opportunity to the pupils to understand the pattern of numbers and application of various skills such as aptitude, objectivity. It was aimed at enhancing their logical reasoning, thinking capability, and understand the wonders in mathematics.

Although the test was common for all the students, winners will be selected class-wise, he said. Cash prizes would be given to winners on February 28 when the birth anniversary of Sir C.V. Raman would be observed.
