Madras High Court Judge C.T. RECOGNITION Madras High Court Judge C.T. Selvam honouring a senior advocate at the Law Day function organised in Kumbakonam on Saturday.

The Bar and the Bench must work in tandem to bring speedy justice to the litigants and thereby reduce pendency of cases, Madras High Court Judge C.T. Selvam said here on Saturday.

Speaking at the Law Day meeting organised by the Kumbakonam Bar Association, Mr. Selvam pointed out that there had been legal luminaries from the rural areas, along with those from the urban regions, also and advocates must keep that in mind while reaching out to the rural people for rendering legal assistance. Their legal aid must result in eradicating poverty among villagers.

Mr. Selvam said that the young advocates must keep themselves abreast of recent developments in the legal field and develop proficiency in the various specialised sectors of law to succeed in today's environment. They must take the help and guidance of senior law practitioners.

Pointing to the growing pendency of cases in courts, Mr. Selvam, who is also the Portfolio Judge in the Madras High Court for Thanjavur district, called upon the Bench and the Bar to work in tandem with a focussed mind to render speedy justice to the litigants. Only that would serve to reduce the pendency, he said.

Principal District Judge A.A. Nakheeran presided over the meet. Bar president M. Rajasekar welcomed the gathering and secretary Dharanidharan proposed a vote of thanks. Advocate K.S. Kannan coordinated the event in which several senior advocates who were members of the Kumbakonam Bar were honoured.

1,239 cases resolved

Held under the auspices of the National Legal Services Authority and the State Legal Services Authority, the Lok Adalat witnessed five sessions in which motor vehicle accident claims cases and other long pending cases in the district courts were taken up for consideration.
