Writer Sujatha Devi dead

The environmental activist and former member of the English faculty in several colleges was 72.

B. Sujatha Devi, award-winning writer, environmental activist and former member of the English faculty in several government colleges across the State, died at a private hospital here on Saturday after a brief illness. She was 72.

Sister of poet Sugathakumari and writer and educationist Prof. Hrdayakumari, Sujatha Devi had won the Kerala Sahithya Academy award for the best travelogue for her work Kaadinte Thaalam Thedi . She wrote poems under the pseudonym Devi. Her poems have been collected under the title Mrnmayi .

Daughter of freedom fighter Bodheswaran and Prof. Karthyayini Amma, she had played a leading role in the anti-Silent Valley Project struggle in the late 1970s and was active subsequently too in several environmental battles in the State and elsewhere.
