The work on plugging a leak detected in the 800-mm water supply line to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) near the Marappalam bridge was in progress when reports last came in, late on Sunday night. Kerala Water Authority (KWA) officials expressed hope that supply through the line can be restored on Monday morning. The heavy rain on Sunday evening delayed the maintenance work.

“The leak rectification is complicated as it has happened due to a disjoint between two bent portions. After realignment and jointing back, anchoring has to be provided to prevent further damage. There is also a culvert constructed by the Kerala Road Fund Board over the line, a portion of which we had to remove to start the work,” said the official. The medical college hospital authorities have informed that there has been no water shortage on the campus as there is adequate storage in the overhead tanks. Water is being refilled in the tanks using tankers from Vellayambalam.

The authorities have asked those in the hospital to reduce the consumption of water.

At Kariyam

The work at Kariyam, where a planned disruption of water supply was in force from Saturday night, was completed and supply restored at 5.30 p.m. on Sunday.
