Public sector hospitals in the State are now delivering high quality care to the people, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.
The quality improvement programmes for government hospitals are being supported by the Union and the State governments, he said, while inaugurating the construction of two high-profile projects at the Government Medical College here on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister also commissioned the new corridor which connects the MCH Super Speciality Block to the old main block, constructed by HLL Lifecare Ltd. at Rs.64 lakh. Two major projects are taking off in the medical college — the multidisciplinary research unit along with a modern animal house and the construction of a Rs.32-crore multi-specialty block which will have a poly-trauma unit, a modern morgue, and a geriatric care centre.
The research unit is a mega project proposed and funded by ICMR, which will have five high-tech laboratories, including those for virology and molecular genetics, and an animal house for conducting clinical experiments. The State government is providing infrastructure support estimated at Rs.27.55 crore.
The multi-specialty block will have high care facilities, ICUs for cardiology (25 bed) and cardiothoracic surgery (18 bed) departments, a 36-bed poly-trauma ICU and a 35-bed multidisciplinary ICU. The geriatric care centre will have 32 beds. The facility will have central air conditioning, air handling units, gas lines etc. and will be well connected to other blocks
The work is expected to be completed by December next year. Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar, presiding over the function, said a new and comprehensive scheme for cancer control would be implemented in the State.
