The rural police were yet to identify the motorbike or rider involved in the hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old woman at Varkala last week.
According to the police, an anonymous person tailed Liji, a saleswoman at a lifestyle goods store, on a motorbike while she was returning home after work on Friday. He allegedly accosted the woman, who responded by hitting him with her umbrella. The police said the man reversed his motorbike and left the spot only to speed back and hit Liji down. She later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Prasanthan Kani said the police were verifying Liji’s cell phone communications and also speaking to her friends and relatives to try and identify the suspect. The police think that unrequited love had resulted in the crime. Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and Superintendent of Police, Rural, A. J. Thomas Kutty, visited Liji’s house. Liji’s parents Jayan and Leena survive her.
