A private bus ran over a 60-year-old woman, killing her on the spot, near the busy Gandhi Park at East Fort on Monday.

According to the Traffic Police, the woman, identified as Shantha, a native of Karamana, was crossing the road after alighting from another bus around 11.30 a.m. and was heading towards the Chala market, when the driver of a private bus, Anugraha Travels, suddenly took the bus forward after dropping its passengers, hitting Shantha from the side.

Accident

He apparently did not see her and continued to take the bus forward, causing Shantha to be caught under the rear wheels of the bus.

Fled from the spot

The driver of the bus, which plied between East Fort and Peroorkada, fled the spot immediately. Police said his address had been traced and that he would be nabbed shortly.

The bus has already been seized.

Shantha, wife of the late Bhagavathy Ashari, is survived by two daughters and a son. The body has been shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital morgue, from where it will be handed over to relatives after autopsy on Tuesday.

The traffic police have registered a case and are on the hunt for the absconding driver.
