The Medical College police on Thursday arrested a 24-year-old woman in connection with the death of her newborn.

The woman worked in the canteen of a private hospital in the city.

Her co-workers found her exhausted and bleeding inside a toilet in the staff quarters in the morning.

They rushed her to the hospital where the doctors found out that she had just given birth.

The hospital authorities called in the police after the woman refused to divulge the whereabouts of her infant.

Later, the police found the body of the infant inside a bag kept in the woman's room.

They were yet to confirm if it was a case of infanticide. An official said the child could have been stillborn.

The woman, whose husband had deserted her a year before, was in a highly traumatised condition.

She has been admitted to the SAT Hospital.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death.

Cremated

The infant's body was cremated at its mother's native place on Thursday evening.
