The Achutha Menon Centre for Health Sciences Studies (AMCHSS), which was set up 25 years ago to train highly competent and socially committed public health professionals and to advocate policies that promote equity in health, today has its students and researchers working in health systems across the country and many international organisations, including the UN and WHO.
“Apart from the quality research work we have done on several health priorities, our biggest achievement has been the fact that we have made public health everybody’s concern. We have pioneered an inclusive model of public health, which involves not just doctors, but people from various fields because we need everyone to be involved in public health. Today, more than 30 centres across the nation offer MPH courses modelled on our programme,” Dr. Ramankutty said.
The AMCHSS is now preparing to take up its research studies to the next level, to molecular epidemiology, to initiate genetic studies in large populations. It is proposing to set up research laboratories and to collaborate with institutions such as the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology to further its goals
