Water supply restored

October 16, 2011 02:33 pm | Updated 02:33 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Water supply to parts of the city serviced by the Kerala Water Authority's (KWA) reservoir at the Observatory Hill, disrupted from 10 a.m. on Saturday, was restored by 6 p.m.

The 84 mld treatment plant at Chithirakkunnu in Aruvikkara was shut down on Saturday morning to allow the dismantling of a defective valve located adjacent to the Thankamma stadium near Ambalamukku. The valve regulates the flow of water in a ‘tapping line' which diverts water from the pumping main pipeline coming from the 84 mld treatment plant to the Peroorkada reservoir.

Once the valve was removed from the pipeline, pumping was resumed from Aruvikkara. Chief Engineer (south), KWA, P.S. Rajendra Babu told The Hindu that KWA personnel located and adjusted another valve in the Peroorkada-Ambalamukku stretch so that there would be even supply of water from Aruvikkara to both the Peroorkada reservoir and the Observatory Hill reservoir.

The areas which were affected on account of Saturday's shut down were Vellayambalam, Sasthamangalam, Vazhuthacaud, Thycaud, Jagathy, Palayam, Statue, Overbridge, Pattoor, Chakka, Kannammoola, Goureesapattom, Kunnukuzhi, Shanghumughom, Veli, Plamood, PMG, Pettah, Valiathura, and Airport area.
