Water supply disrupted

August 02, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:01 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Drinking water taps in the city went dry on Monday after the Kerala Water Authority was forced to stop pumping at Aruvikkara Treatment plant following power failure on Sunday night.

According to KWA officials, a huge tree inside the treatment plant fell on the electric line on Sunday night, disrupting power supply to the Aruvikkara plant.

The four treatment plants at Aruvikkara remained completely shut till Monday noon causing disruption in several parts of the city, the official said.

Snapped electric line

“The electric line was restored only by noon. Though we started pumping water to the tanks by 2 p.m, again problems surfaced on power distribution network.

By evening it was completely rectified and normal supply will be restored by Tuesday morning,” said a senior KWA official.

Frantic calls

With taps going dry, residents made frantic calls to the KWA helpline seeking immediate intervention to restore the supply. In several places, the water utility supplied drinking water in tankers.
