The supply of drinking water to many parts of the city serviced by the reservoir of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) at Observatory Hill was disrupted since 8 a.m. on Monday following a leak in the 700-mm pipeline that ferries water from the reservoir.
The leak was detected at a point near the Museum junction.
V. Chandran, executive engineer of the Thiruvananthapuram PH division, said here that repair work on the line would be completed by midnight on Monday and normal supply of water would be restored by Tuesday morning.
Crack on underside
K.P. Krishnakumar, superintending engineer of the Thiruvananthapuram circle, said here that the crack was found on the underside of the cast iron line, laid in 1973. This appears to suggest that the crack developed when there was some kind of heavy load over the line.
The affected areas in the city include Vellayambalam, Sasthamangalam, Vazhuthacaud, Jagathy, Palayam, Statue, Overbridge, General Hospital, Pattoor, Pettah, Valiathura, Airport, Thumba, Chaka, Shanghumughom, Veli, Plamoodu, PMG, Goureesapattom and Kunnukuzhi.
A press note issued here said the KWA had arranged for water tankers to supply water free of cost to these areas.
