The supply of water to several parts of the city, disrupted at 10 p.m. on Thursday, was being restored. Officials said the restoration would be complete by Saturday morning.
The supply was disrupted owing to maintenance work by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) on a main distribution line catering to the Manvila and Peroorkada zones.
The works, which included replacement of a faulty valve on a 400-mm distribution line at Ambalamukku and repair of a leak on the same line at the spot where the pipe had burst on April 18, were completed by 5 p.m. on Friday. M. Krishnakumar, KWA Superintending Engineer, said the leak was caused after the wheels of a heavy lorry sunk right over the pipeline into the mud, which was yet to become firm after Friday’s works. This had applied pressure on the pipeline, leading to another leak. This was also completed by 5 p.m., he said, adding that pumping through the line had begun soon after.
The areas that were affected included Peroorkada, Ambalamukku, Shasthamangalam, Kowdiar, Jawahar Nagar, Kuravankonam, Pattom, Ulloor, Kesavadasapuram, Muttada, Sreekaryam, and Manvila.
A meeting of the KWA’s Crisis Management Group was convened here on Friday. It decided to go for another shutdown to facilitate installation of a 200-mm valve on the 1200-mm cast iron pipeline bringing water to the Observatory Hill reservoir, tentatively on April 30. The valve was to enable an interconnection between the 1200-mm pipeline and a 200-mm ductile iron line that facilitates local water supply in and around Aruvikkara. The shutdown could disrupt water supply for about five hours, a senior official said.
