VS tells Chandy to quit

January 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan demanded here on Thursday that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy resign in view of the High Court order against the government decision to withdraw the palmolein case.

If he has a semblance of morality, Mr. Chandy should not continue as Chief Minister, he said.

The Leader of the Opposition said the court had observed that the case was not politically motivated and that the withdrawal of the case would be a challenge to rule of law. This was the latest setback to Mr. Chandy who was trying to stick to power by misusing powers.

Mr. Achuthanandan also demanded that the government withdraw from the move to appoint Jiji Thomson as Chief Secretary as Mr. Thomson was an accused in the case.

The CPI (M) State secretariat observed that the High Court order was a big blow to the government which had forfeited the right to continue in office.

Findings serious: CPI

CPI State secretary Pannian Ravindran said the findings of the court were serious enough to warrant the resignation of Mr. Chandy.

CPI legislature party secretary V.S. Sunil Kumar said the court had defeated a move to undermine the administration of justice by Mr. Chandy and the Cabinet. Welcoming the judgment, he demanded that Mr. Chandy quit office.

Demands for Mr. Chandy’s resignation have been made by CMP Polit Bureau member G. Sugunan and the DYFI State secretariat.
