Vizhinjam lighthouse to be made tourist destination

December 23, 2013 01:52 pm | Updated 01:52 pm IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The Centre will revive the proposal to promote the Vizhinjam lighthouse as a tourist destination, Union Minister of State for Communication, IT, and Shipping Milind Deora said here on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference on the lighthouse premises, Mr. Deora said the proposal was to establish an elevator and a heritage museum to showcase the maritime traditions of the State.

The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) had identified 15 lighthouses for the promotion of tourism.

The work had already started at four places. The Madras lighthouse had been thrown open to visitors. The work at the Mahabalipuram, Kanhoji Angre, and Dolphin Nose lighthouses were in progress.

The DGLL had, in association with the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation, taken up the Vizhinjam lighthouse tourism project on public-private-participation (PPP) model, he said.
