The role of NGOs in protecting the destitute has become increasingly important, Shashi Tharoor, MP, has said. He was speaking at ‘Vishu Sangamam' organised by Karma Socio-Cultural Organisation at the government day-care centre for the aged/ old age home for women, Poojappura, on Monday.

He said the present facilities provided by the government in ensuring their security were not sufficient and, in such conditions, NGOs played an important role.

“A good society is created when people who constitute it are pure at heart. When such human values are lost, the number of orphanages and old-age homes increase,” he said.

At the function, Mr. Tharoor also distributed ‘Vishu Kaineettam.' Karma also distributed water purifiers, medicines, and other items to the members of the old-age home, a press release issued here said.
