Five persons, all activists of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), were arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of Narayanan Nair, father of Sivaprasad, the Vellarada area secretary of the Students Federation of India (SFI), on Tuesday.

J. Mohandas, Circle Inspector, Vellarada, identified the accused as Vellamkolli Rajesh, Anil Kumar alias Kunchu, Girish Kumar, Premkumar, and Prasad Kumar, all natives of Keezharoor near Pashuvannara. Mr. Mohandas said they were produced before court and remanded in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the situation in and around Vellarada continued to be tense with minor altercations between Left front activists and RSS supporters being reported from various parts of the region.

An incident of stone-throwing on a house was reported from near Narayanan Nair’s house at Anavoor. The police have so far registered one case of arson and five cases of dacoity in connection with the flare-up after the murder. There were no arrests so far in connection with these. With accusations of theft also being raised, arrests would be made after each complaint of dacoity was investigated separately, police said.
