Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan on Wednesday said the assessment for minority community status should be made State specific.
Inaugurating the distribution of loans under the 10th SNDP microfinance scheme, Mr. Natesan said it was high time to review whether communities in Kerala which enjoyed minority status actually belonged to that category.
“The assessment of minority communities should be based on the number of people in a particular State. And based on this assessment, these communities should be given special benefits,” he said.
Mr. Natesan said organised minority community forces were seizing control over the social and political spheres of the State, and the rights and issues of the majority communities were being sidelined.
“Communal forces have attained unprecedented power and clout today,” Mr. Natesan said.
He said unification of the majority communities was the need of the hour. Earlier, Excise Minister K. Babu inaugurated the function. Mr. Babu said the SNDP microfinance scheme had emerged as a major initiative with a turnover of around Rs.3,000 crore.
“This microfinance scheme is an exemplary initiative that has helped many women self-help groups to attain self-reliance,” he said. Mr. Babu added that the government would try to address the issues and demands put forward by the organisation.
