Education Minister M.A. Baby said here on Monday that the State government would submit a memorandum to the Central government requesting it to revoke the decision to exclude mentally retarded (MR) students from IEDSS (Inclusive Education of the Disabled at Secondary Stage) schemes after standard six.
Mr. Baby said this after interacting with the IEDC (Integrated Education for Disabled Children) scheme students who appeared for the SSLC examination at K.S. Abraham Memorial HSS at Thirumala, on Monday.
“The Central government is making lame excuses and denying the benefit of its schemes to MR children. But the observations made by the Centre regarding regular schooling of MR children is wrong as far as Kerala is concerned,” he said.
As many as 5,775 IEDC scheme students are appearing for the SSLC examinations in the State this year.
He said the department was planning to implement many new schemes for themthis year.
As many as 11 IEDC students appeared for the exams at K.S. Abraham Memorial HSS. The Minister distributed sweets to the students who completed their first SSLC exam at the school.
Earlier, Mr. Baby also visited the Cotton Hills GGHSS.
