Uncertainty over dialysis units at district hospitals

Congress MLAs had announced setting up of units at Nedumangad, Peroorkada

July 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

There is uncertainty over setting up of dialysis units in the recently upgraded district hospitals at Peroorkada and Nedumangad.

Though Congress legislators, while attending the Hospital Management Committee meetings during the tenure of the United Democratic Front government, had announced that dialysis units had been sanctioned for the hospitals, doctors there are clueless about any development in this regard.

Since the announcement of the setting up of the units, patients with chronic kidney ailments have been thronging the hospitals to know about the status of the proposal.

“We are not aware of any such proposal. But the open declaration by the elected representatives has created confusion in the minds of patients. We have received about 20 applications for dialysis,” said a senior doctor in the district hospital at Nedumangad. The case was almost similar at Peroorkada, said the doctor.

The district panchayat, which runs the hospital, too was not aware of any government decision, but the civic body has expressed its intent to set up the facility in the two hospitals.

The demand for dialysis, the doctor said, was growing day by day and the only solace now for the people living in rural areas was the mobile dialysis unit of the district panchayat.

“The mobile unit comes to the hospitals twice a week. However, patients somehow don’t prefer to have the dialysis done in the mobile units. In Nedumangad, only four patients use the facility,” said the doctor.

Cost factor

An official in the civic body said they were actively persuading the case. “We have included the proposal in the current plan fund but fulfilment of the project could be done with the support of the government owing to the huge expenditure involved,” said an official.
