The ruling United Democratic Front’s (UDF) election coordination committee has concluded that the alliance is well on track in its campaign and would get between 77 and 82 seats in the May 16 Assembly elections.
The committee, chaired by UDF convener P.P. Thankachan, was of the view that the UDF could make clear headway on the campaign front and that Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s visit and speeches had touched a chord among the masses.
The UDF would score upset wins in some of the strong LDF constituencies, though it might suffer unexpected defeats in some of the sitting seats. The performance of the alliance would be better than last time in Kollam and Kozhikode districts. The BJP would not open account in the Assembly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated visits to the State or the crores of rupees being spent by the National Democratic Alliance would have no effect, the committee felt.
Agency appointed
The committee had contracted a professional agency to monitor its campaign. The committee had submitted two reports to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who is also the UDF chairman.
The committee reviewed the steps taken to rectify the shortcomings pointed out by the agency and identified the constituencies where special attention needs to be paid in the last round.
The committee was happy about the impact of the print and video publicity material prepared by the alliance.
