Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has criticised the State Police for the delay in acting against culprits involved in the brutal rape and murder of a law student at Perumbavoor.

Addressing an election convention of Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate V. Sivankutty at Poojappura here on Tuesday, he said the police force failed to act against the culprits even five days after the occurrence of the heinous crime.

“It seems, they (police), are more interested to help their political masters who are facing charges. They have failed to arrest those involved in the rape and murder of an innocent girl,” he said.

Urging people to vote the United Democratic Front (UDF) out of power, he said the five-year tenure of the UDF was marked by corruption with the Chief Minister and Ministers facing allegations of nepotism. “They have used the government exchequer to benefit their families,” he said.

Taking a swipe at senior Congress leader A.K Antony, he said Mr. Antony had to rush back to Delhi from the campaign trail in the State as his name had surfaced in the Chopper scam.

The Congress was trying to use the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) to enter into an unholy alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). To please BDJS leader Vellappally Natesan, the government had allotted 100 acres in Idukki to Mr. Natesan, he said.

Coming down heavily on the BJP, he said it was trying to whip up communal passion and polarise the country on communal lines. Since Narendra Modi took over as the Prime Minister of the country, there had been growing incidents of intolerance. The Sangh Parivar, while trying to implement its communal agenda, was also planning to take away reservation benefits given to socially deprived sections.

Earlier, Mr. Achuthanandan addressed an election convention the LDF candidate in Kazhakuttam Kadakampally Surendran and LDF candidate in Vattiyurkavu T.N. Seema at Pottakuzhi.
