The Left Democratic Front (LDF) council party on Thursday said the day-and-night protest by the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) councillors was completely uncalled for.

In a press note issued here, V.S. Padmakumar, LDF council party secretary, described the demonstration staged in front of the Corporation as a political stunt that had achieved nothing and had caused inconvenience to people who visited the Corporation for various needs.

On Wednesday, the UDF conducted a mock ritual, ‘Chandrika Homam’, complete with burning hearth and a prayer chant exhorting Mayor K. Chandrika to solve the city’s civic issues. Mr. Padmakumar said the ruling party had secured an assurance from the Kerala State Electricity Board that street lights would be repaired soon. He said LDF councillors would hold an indefinite strike in front of the KSEB office if it failed to light up the city by December 15.

Meanwhile, the Hindu Aikya Vedi has criticised the ‘Chandrika Homam’ terming it an affront to religious sentiments. In a press release, Tirumala Anil, member of State committee member of the Vedi, said exploiting Hindu rituals and manner of worship for political gimmicks was unacceptable.
