Councillors belonging to the United Democratic Front (UDF) on Tuesday staged a dharna on the city Corporation premises in protest against the civic body’s inaction in addressing the drinking water shortage in the city.

Addressing the protest, leader of the UDF in the council Johnson Joseph said the Corporation was abdicating its responsibility of providing drinking water to the people and instead trying to shift the blame on the State government.

Criticising Mayor K. Chandrika for not attending the meeting convened by the Chief Minister on April 15 to discuss water scarcity, he said the ruling Left Democratic Front was only interested in criticising the State government. The State government had even promised to reimburse the amount spent by civic bodies for supplying drinking water using Plan funds.

Help ignored

“This gesture means that the State government was ready to help the local bodies in addressing the drinking water shortage. But the city Corporation refused to work with the State government,” Mr. Joseph said.
