A speeding private bus fatally knocked down a woman two-wheeler rider and killed a workshop mechanic, besides injuring seven other persons at Jawahar Park, near Varkala, on Tuesday morning.
The bus proceeding to Chirayinkeezhu from Paravur was trying to overtake another bus when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle. The bus first hit the scooter and then rammed into the mechanic showroom. The deceased woman rider, Sandhya Mohan, 27, a resident of Ayroor, near Varkala, was on way to the school to drop her children when the accident occurred. She was trapped beneath the bus, killing her on the spot, while her two children- Yedhu Krishnan and Devika were thrown off to the opposite side. The children sustained minor injuries.
The mechanic, Santhosh, 30, was immediately rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Five other persons, two of them pedestrians and the remaining three travelling on the bus, sustained injuries.
Sub Inspector of Varkala J. S Praveen, told The Hindu that they have a registered a case under section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC. Immediately after the accident, the driver fled from the scene, he said.
