The Vizhinjam police on Sunday arrested two persons on charge of various cases of theft.
The accused have been identified as Sreejith of Anad and Jiju Thomas of Chavara in Kollam.
They were apprehended by the Shadow Police following an investigation into the theft of three mobile phones and Rs.25,000 from a house where migrant labourers were staying at Panangode in Venganoor on March 24.
Migrants targeted
The police said that the accused had confessed to similar thefts from other houses where migrant labourers stayed. They felt that migrant labourers were unlikely to register complaints at police stations.
Jiju Thomas, who had served a jail term for a financial fraud, joined hands with Sreejith, a mobile technician, to establish a mobile repair unit in Kollam. While they used to split the cash they stole, the duo used to remove the parts of stolen high-end smart phones and fit them in phones brought to their shop for repair. They would also place the cheaper phones they stole for sale. The police have confiscated around 50 mobile phones from the accused. The assistance of the Cyber Cell was sought to identify the owners of the stolen goods.
