Multitude of children take part in The Hindu-Young World painting event

It was twin victory for sisters Anjana Mahesh and Karthika Mahesh, students of Holy Angels ISC School, Nanthencode, who bagged the first prize in the senior and junior categories respectively of the 21st edition of The Hindu-Young World Painting competition, which concluded at Nirmala Bhavan Higher Secondary School, in the city, on Sunday.

Chief guests, renowned film-maker T.K. Rajeev Kumar and Latha Kurien Rajeev, distributed cash prizes to the winners. Speaking at the function, Mr. Rajeev Kumar said today, children had the opportunity to nurture their artistic talents and even look for successful career opportunities in the field of art, drama, and cinema.

Second prize in the senior category went to M.G. Gouthamy of Saraswathi Vidyalaya,Vattiyurkavu. Aarcha Suseendran of St. Thomas Central School, Mukkolakal, came third in the senior category. In the junior category, C.M. Mohammed of Muslim Association Model School, Thycaud, bagged the second prize while Kashmeera Nousheer of Kendriya Vidyala, Adoor, bagged the third prize.

Artist B.D. Dethan judged the entries and the 10 best paintings in each category were selected for various prizes. Mr. Dethan told The Hindu that even though some of the works were good, the true potential of the students remained untapped. The competition, being held in 15 cities across south India, is an integral part of the Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme of The Hindu.

The top three winners would take home a cash prize of Rs.5,000, Rs.3,000, and Rs.2,000 respectively in the senior category, while it is Rs.3,000, Rs.2,000, and Rs.1,000 in the junior category. The title sponsor of the competition is MIOT International. The associate sponsors are Relief Cough and Cold and Dabur Red Paste.

The following students won the consolation prizes, Rs.500, in cash, in the Junior category. Vaishnavi Sundar, Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Kumarapuram; M.T. Vaishnav, Government High School, Avanavanchery; Nithin Prasad, Navbharath EMHS, Attingal; J. Rose Mary and Gouri J. Nair from Nirmala Bhavan Higher Secondary School, Kowdiar; M. Mathangi, Holy Angels ISC, Nanthencode; and A. Bhadra, St. Thomas Central School, Mukkolakal.

Rahul, Government High School, Avanavanchery; Shikha Sivaraman, St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Pattom; V.N. Soumya, Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Kodunganoor; G. Aparna, Army Public School, Pangode; and B. Jishnu, Christ Nagar HSS, Kowdiar; got the consolation prizes in the senior category.
