Truckers plan blockade of check-post

Failure to install vehicle scanners and prevent delay

March 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has warned the State government of staging a blockade at the Walayar check-post from the midnight on April 1 if it failed to honour the commitment to install vehicle scanners to ensure free truck movement.

Congress president Bhim Wadhwa said in a release here on Tuesday that the corrupt practices at the check-post should end. The government had agreed to install the scanners in a time-bound manner to check tax evasion and ensure free entry and movement of goods and transport vehicles. This would help streamline the process of document verification, he said.

The harassment of drivers, corruption, and inordinate delay continued unabated at the check-post. The government should explain why scanners had not been installed.

The government had promised to allocate 30 acres of land to set up a parking lot and restrooms for drivers and crew. The government failed to keep this promise too, he said.

The deadline by the congress for installation of scanners would expire on March 25. If there was no palpable progress, truckers would jam the check-post, Mr. Wadhwa said.
