Kani Moopans roped in to increase voting percentage in tribal hamlets

The district administration has roped in Kani Moopans (tribal chiefs) to increase voting percentage in tribal hamlets in the district. The Moopans will be the brand ambassadors of the department in getting maximum voters from tribal villages, an official release here said.

District Collector-cum-District Electoral Officer Biju Prabhakar on Friday launched the programme at a function held near Statue. The administration has roped in the services of seven tribal chiefs to attract voters in Kottoor settlements under the Aruvikkara constituency. The administration has appointed Kunjuraman Kani, Mallan Kani, Chellappan Kani, Chandran Kani, Krishnan Kani, Velliyayan Kani, and Sunil Kumar Kani as ambassadors in Kottoor settlements.

Task of enrolling more voters

The chiefs are given the task to enrol more voters, especially from among the younger generation, the release said. Mr. Prabhakar said steps had been taken to spread awareness among tribal community on the need to vote.

Assistant Collector, Kottayam, Divya S. Aiyar administered a voters’ pledge at the function. The district administration, in association with the SBT, also launched a sticker-poster campaign to increase voter awareness. The bank would open its 850-odd branches and 1,000 ATMs to display posters carrying the message “My Vote, My Future.’
