December 09, 2014 09:36 am | Updated 09:36 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

A labourer died and another sustained serious injuries after a trench they were digging for a pipeline collapsed on them near Thiruvallam early on Monday.

The police said Mazumdar, 65, of Kolkata and Sumesh, 44, of Vandithadam were inside a 10-ft deep trench along with two other labourers around 2 a.m. on Monday while an earthmover was shifting mud from near the trench. The side of the trench where the earthmover was suddenly gave in, trapping Mazumdar and Sumesh underneath.

Though they were rushed to the Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, Mazumdar succumbed to spinal and head injuries.

Sumesh is undergoing treatment for broken ribs and internal injuries. The body of Mazumdar, who had been working in the State close to eight years, has been shifted to the mortuary.
