New projects launched on Wednesday
The Special Sub Jail in the city is getting a face lift with as many as five new projects and facilities coming up in the jail.
Home Minister Thiruvanchiyoor Radhakrishnan inaugurated the new projects here at the jail premises on Wednesday.
Prominent among them is the Rs.1.6-crore solar energy projects to address the need for adopting a renewable source of energy. The Minister laid the foundation stone for the project on Wednesday. The project will be implemented in the same manner as in the Central Jail at Poojappura.
The solar panels will be set up in the main block. Once operational, it is expected to reduce the jail’s energy needs to a large extent. The implementing agency of this project is KELTRON.
Inmates will also have the opportunity to explore the world of books in the newly set up library. The sub jail also has set up a public address system and customised FM radio units in each block and cell for recreation.
“The public address system will aid in coordinating important events and could thus ease the burden on the police officials while addressing a large group. The library will be equipped with larger and better collection of books depending on the fund allotment,” said B. Pradeep, jail superintendent.
Special coin-operated telephones will be now made available for the inmates for communicating with their family and other officials concerned.
“A special directory of the contact persons for each inmate is maintained. They will be allowed to call family and lawyers approved by the authorities for an allotted time,” added Mr. Pradeep.
