The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has registered a suo motu case and issued a notice to the City Police Commissioner in connection with a complaint that policemen had stolen spare parts valued at Rs.27,000 from a tipper lorry in the custody of the Museum police.
According to an SHRC release here, commission chairman J.B. Koshy had issued the notice following a complaint lodged by N. Sanal Kumar of Parassala, pointing out that his lorry, which was carrying m-sand, was taken into custody by Museum sub inspector Bhasi at Edapazhanji on July 16 and taken to the police station.
Armed with an order from the District Collector directing the release of the vehicle, Sanal Kumar approached the Museum police on August 19. However, there he found that diesel worth Rs.2,500, a battery worth Rs.7,000, tools worth Rs.4,000 and spare tyres worth Rs.13,000 were missing from the vehicle.
He alleged that he was ridiculed by the policemen when he brought this to their notice.
The Commission has also asked for notices to be served on the sub inspector and the Museum station house officer.
Explanations have to be submitted by September 30 and the commission will hear the case on October 4.
