A massive combing operation conducted by the police in the city from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday saw cases being registered against 1,277 persons for traffic violations and several others being arrested on various charges.

The operation, conducted in view of the forthcoming Sri Krishna Jayanti, Ganeshotsav, and Onam festivals, was led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) A. Srinivas and involved officers from all police stations in the city. The arrests included that of Nimesh, who was absconding for long and was wanted in several theft cases, by the Pettah police while the Nemom police arrested Radhakrishnan, an absconder wanted in cheque cases. The Nemom police also seized over 600 packets of banned tobacco products from the house of Nazir of Shantivila.

Others arrested included 125 persons against whom non-bailable warrants were issued by various courts; 125 persons who were wanted in various cases; and 196 who were apprehended on charges of creating nuisance to women and in public spaces in an inebriated condition. Cases were registered and action initiated against 99 persons for smoking in public places while 134 drivers had cases booked against them for drunk, reckless, and over-speed driving. Action was taken against 796 persons for riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets while the police also conducted raids on 102 lodges in the city, a press release issued here said.
