There have been measures aplenty to fight corruption at the City Corporation. But those with right ‘ability’ have always been able to escape the net. Now with the local body authorities waking up to the ineffectiveness of these measures, tighter monitoring is being worked out, including the setting up of a Vigilance wing and the installation of a few closed circuit cameras on the Corporation office premises.
According to a Corporation official, though the Vigilance officials keep visiting at regular intervals, this has not been sufficient to stem the corruption menace.
“The officials visit, seize files and recommend action. Action has been taken against some. But the corrupt ones are still thriving. So, the setting up of a permanent Vigilance wing on the premises will be of much help. This team can keep a constant watch on the happenings in the various sections and take prompt action if they find something illegal,” said the official.
Discussions onNo decision has been taken yet on the final form of such a wing, nor has been the number of personnel needed for it finalised. “The discussions are still in the early stage,” the official said.
The civic body is also thinking of installing closed circuit cameras in major sections where clearances are accorded. “We cannot be sure that all the money exchange takes place within the premises. But at least within the office, we can trace it if there are cameras,” the source said.
One of the major sections which has a history of corruption is the one for granting building permits where private agents are said to have a huge influence. The Corporation Secretary had earlier banned the agents from entering during office hours.
