The Legislative Assembly Complex with its sprawling premises was an awe-inspiring sight for the young residents of the Sree Chithra Home. On Saturday, the complex ceased to be an enigma for them.
The 72 residents of the home were taken through the Assembly chamber, the museum inside in the complex, and given classes on the proceedings in the House.
The visit was the result of an initiative taken by Speaker G. Karthikeyan to throw open the doors of the Assembly to the young generation, to make them aware of the importance of the nerve centre of the polity that is celebrating its 125 year.
Addressing the young visitors, Mr. Karthikeyan said the State had earned its freedom from royalty and from the British Raj.
Now, it was for the Legislative Assembly to see to it that laws for the development of the State and the protection of democracy were made.
It was also imperative that the young generation learned about democracy and the Assembly, which was the headquarters of the democratic set-up.
Classes given
The visitors were given classes on personality development, on the Assembly, its history, significance and functioning, after which they were taken on a tour of the important installations within the complex. Such visits would be conducted regularly, Mr. Karthikeyan said. Students from remote villages in the district had earlier come to see the Assembly, he said.
