Theft at bishop house: one held

November 30, 2013 12:02 pm | Updated 12:02 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The city police have arrested from Coimbatore an accused in a series of burglaries.

The police said Paul Raj, 65, was arrested by a police team based on information from Bijuraj, 46, who was arrested earlier this week. The two were partners in crime.

Sheen Tharayil, Circle Inspector, Thampanoor, said they had jointly burgled the house of Bishop K.P. Kuruvilla of the North Kerala diocese of the Church of South India at Shasthamangalam in April, during which the bishop’s ecclesiastical ring was also stolen. This was just one of the several thefts the duo had carried out across the State.

Bijuraj’s efforts to sell the ring had failed, and the ring later turned out to be crucial evidence that linked him to the burglary.

Paul Raj was the one who sold the gold that Bijuraj stole. Several gold ornaments had been seized from him, Mr. Tharayil said, adding that the accused was produced before court and remanded in judicial custody.
