A 21-year-old girl working in Technopark was assaulted by a person near Sainik School, Kazhakuttam, while she was returning home on Monday night.
The Kazhakuttam police on Tuesday registered a case against an unidentified person under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 354 (punishment for assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code.
Quoting from the girl’s complaint, police said the girl, a resident of a place on the outskirts of the city, was returning home in her two-wheeler when a youth in a motorbike waylaid and assaulted her. A team has been formed to trace the culprit based on the description of the vehicle model and physical appearance of the assailant given by the victim.
The girl told The Hindu over phone that she had stopped the two-wheeler to answer her mobile phone when she was attacked. The suspect tried to push her off the two-wheeler to the side of the road, but she managed to regain control of the vehicle and ride ahead.
No street lights
She said he continued to chase her, until she turned into her cousin’s home a few kilometres along the road. The route was desolate and there were no street lights. She called the Vanitha Cell around 10 p.m., who assured her that a police official would contact her.
She filed a complaint on Tuesday morning. While the officials cooperated by alerting other stations about the make of the suspect’s vehicle, she said they told her they would register the case only the following day, she said.
