As many as 9,264 persons committed suicide in the State during the one year period ending May this year. Thiruvananthapuram tops the list with 1,533 cases.
This was stated by Minister for Home Ramesh Chennithala in the Assembly on Thursday. The rural police limits of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kozhikode registered more suicides compared to the city limits in the five districts.
In the capital district, the rural police limits recorded 1,135 suicides, while 398 cases were reported from the city limits.
In Ernakulam, the rural limits registered 533 suicides and 228 cases were reported from the city limits. In Kozhikode rural, 433 committed suicide during the period, while 346 in the city limits.
In Kollam district, 731 suicide cases were reported from the rural police limits and 313 from the city.
In Thrissur, 696 suicide cases were reported from rural limits, while 275 cases were reported from the city limits.
Among the other districts, Palakkad reported 812 suicides followed by Kannur with 701, Kottayam (545), Alappuzha (478), Idukki (421), Malappuram (333), Wayanad (322), and Pathanamthitta 291. The lowest 271 cases were reported from Kasaragod. Two suicides were reported from the railway premises in the State.
