She is not in the best of health but poet B. Sugathakumari’s spirits were lifted on Wednesday evening when young students and very senior Gandhian activists alike gathered at her residence to celebrate her 80 birthday.

Ms. Sugathakumari cut a cake brought by students of the Government Women’s College.

She interacted with the students and urged them to be socially conscious. She told them that it was for the youth to make a difference in environment conservation and other pertinent issues. “You must not succumb to pressures from any front,” she told the 50-odd students from different colleges who came for the function.

Chairman of All India Gandhi Smarak Nidhi P. Gopinathan Nair attended the function. Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi general secretary K.G. Jagadeeshan, Gandhian Studies Centre coordinator J.M. Rahim, and District Sarvodaya Mandalam president G. Sadanandan were also present.
