A strike by workers of the Kazhakuttam bottling unit of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. has affected LPG supply in the city for the past one week. The truck drivers had launched the strike on May 1, seeking better remuneration.
They raised a charter of demands, including better bonus and increase in night allowance. An official with BPCL said talks between the Labour Department and truck owners had reached a final stage.
“The Labour Commissioner discussed the situation with the truck owners and crew on Thursday. The stalemate might end by Friday,” the official said.
The Indian National Trade Union Congress has urged the Chief Minister to convene a meeting of truck owners, drivers, and government agencies concerned to arrive at an amicable solution. The government should work out a formula that would be binding for at least three to four years. Once such a formula was worked out, all should adhere to it, general secretary of INTUC R. Chandrasekhar said.
