Stray dog sterilisation resumes

January 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme of the city Corporation, which has been in limbo in recent months, has been revived with the NGO Humane Society of India (HSI) starting off its operations on Tuesday. On the first day, two dogs were sterilised at the new facility set up at the Government Veterinary Hospital at Pettah.

According to HSI staff, the aim is to sterilise 10 to 15 dogs on a daily basis, with work on a typical day stretching from 5.30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Our team right now has four people and two more people are expected to join us in the coming days. We do the catching, sterilisation and the post-sterilisation care all by ourselves. The team goes out early in the morning to catch the dogs from specific areas. Each dog is identified with our tracking system so that we can return them to the area from which they were caught after sterilisation,” says Anubhav Khajuria, who heads the HSI team here.

The Corporation has to gives Rs.445 to the organisation as fee for sterilisation and post-sterilisation care for each stray dog. The HSI is planning some community engagement to inform and educate the public about their work.
