Two two-week stray dog sterilisation drives will be undertaken in Karumkulam panchayat from Friday, Local Self-Government Minister K.T. Jaleel said on Tuesday. Week-long sterilization drives will also be held in the neighbouring Poovar, Kottukal and Kanjiramkulam panchayats.
The decision comes in the wake of the incident on Sunday where a person was mauled to death by stray dogs at Pulluvila, Karumkulam.
Four teams, including doctors from the Animal Husbandry Department, will conduct the sterilisation, with the help of trained dog-catchers. Local bodies will coordinate the dog-catching. “Anti-Rabies vaccinations will also be administered more actively,” the Minister aid
The District Collector has been directed to ensure that the waste dumps in the areas are cleared as soon as possible, the Minister said at a press conference here.
Waste treatment plant
The establishment of a waste treatment plant at the Karumkulam panchayat to prevent the dumping of meat waste in the coastal area has also been decided, in principle. The plant will be set up under the ambit of Suchitwa Mission.
The local MLA and panchayat representatives have agreed to identify a plot for the plant, the Minister said.
Further, the Collector has also been directed to examine the prospects of setting up a ‘dog zoo’ for the protection of stray dogs on a 2-acre plot owned by the district panchayat.
The solatium for the deceased person of Pulluvila would be decided at the Cabinet meeting, Mr. Jaleel said.
An additional affidavit, with information about the present circumstances of the issue, will be submitted to the Supreme Court in connection with the existing case on stray dog menace.
