Minister for Health K.K. Shylaja said here on Friday that concerted effort by the Health Department, Local Self-Government Department, health workers, and the people was needed to address the problem of dengue fever.

She was speaking after flagging off an awareness rally on dengue fever, organised in association with the Indian Medical Association district chapter, National Health Mission, and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, at Palayam here on Friday.

The Minister said every individual should help manage waste in their immediate surroundings and prevent water stagnation so as to aid source reduction of mosquitoes.

She said that majority of the dengue cases in the State had been reported from the capital city. Public awareness and their participation in controlling vector-borne diseases were crucial.

She said people with fever should take necessary treatment without delay. They should also avoid areas where people congregate till they are completely cured. Children suffering from fever should not be sent to school so as to prevent other children from catching the disease.

Medical camp

Mayor V.K. Prasanth said a medical camp would be held for controlling dengue. He appealed to the people to do their utmost for waste management.

The dengue awareness rally will tour all parts of the city on Friday and Saturday. Health workers will reach all major junctions and pass on information to the public and clear their doubts. The IMA will conduct talks with flat owners and residents’ associations regarding vector-control.
