Steps for waste disposal in Varkala

December 17, 2011 02:34 pm | Updated 02:34 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Varkala Tourism Development Association is providing buckets to restaurants on the cliff at the Papanasam beach resort in the Varkala municipal limits to make waste removal by municipal workers hassle-free.

Already, 50 restaurants have been provided with the buckets free of cost by the association headed by N. Peethambara Kurup, MP. The municipal workers will remove waste from the bucket daily, according to A. Dawood, vice-chairman of the association and chairperson of the Health Standing Committee of Varkala municipality.

Mr. Dawood said this arrangement had been worked out to ensure that the hoteliers did not dump the waste in the municipal limits. It would help maintain hygiene in the municipality and prevent outbreak of epidemics.

The association would provide buckets to other restaurants in the municipality soon. The garbage plant set up in the municipality had not become fully functional to take care of the waste accumulated in Varkala. Steps were are on to make it operational, he added.
